TUTORIAL R01 Make vase

How to make a vase from a sketch
Open Rokuro pro and let's start with Rokuro tab to make a vase's shape.
In Japanese Rokuro means a pottery wheel so I decided to start with a pottery vase as my example.

Once in Rokuro tab, you can start creating your shape right away by moving control points. However, it is always better to first draw a sketch of your shape and use it as a base for your future sculptie. It gives you precision and makes your work faster.


When you import your sketch into Rokuro pro, it is positioned automatically in the middle of your working area so make sure your sketch more or less looks like a square to match it.
To import the sketch, go to View > Load background and choose your sketch file.

Use the sketch file as a guideline and move the control points.

In second life the resolution of a sculpted prim depends on the distance between sculpted prim and your camera view which is also called LOD - level of detail. You can't see the maximum resolution of a sculptie unless your camera is in a close proximity of it. That's why it's important to arrange your square control points (colored in blue, black and red) into the defining positions of your sculptie. In other words, a round grey control point should be treated as supportive points and colored square control points should define the form of your sculptie especially corners and angles.

When your shape is done, you can save the sculpted map in .tga format by going to FILE > SAVE. It's recommended to include _SP into the name of the file to make a distinction between your sculpted map and texture.

How to make a texture for vase sculptie

Before making your own texture convert this grid image from an index color into an RBG mode and add an additional layer on top of it in your graphics software like Photoshop. The grid will be your base guideline for drawing a texture. Then draw on top layer and compare of grid numbers on your bottom layer with their positions on your sculptie in rokuro pro. Rokuro pro can use PSD file as a texture. Only your top layer will be displayed.

X0-X3 the inside of the vase
X4 the bright blue opening of the vase
X5-XC is the blue graduation of the outside of the vase
XF is the bottom color

Now go to Rokuro pro and in your menu select TEXTURE > LOAD, choose your PSD file of the texture and click ok.

The vase is done. You can experiment by yourself with the texture by adding noise, more depth into the shadow and light. Remember that you can always preview your texture in Rokuro pro viewer before uploading it to SL. Here I added a bit more feeling of potted ceramic to the texture by applying noise effect.

As I previously mentioned, in-world your sculptie will look different depending on how far your camera is from it. When it is in close proximity, your sculptie will have high resolution. However, when it is zoomed out, your sculptie will morph into a much simpler shape. That's why it's important to make sure that the loss of resolution is minimum by positioning all your square control points into its strategical place.
In Rokuro pro you can check how your sculptie will look with middle and low resolution and adjust your square control points accordingly to minimize the loss of resolution. In menu go to VIEW > VIEW LEVEL > MIDDLE.

With middle level of resolution, your sculptie will look something like that which is very close to our original image. Always check your sculptie resolution this way to avoid low LOD items.

However, try to avoid creating your initial form in this view. As you can see, grey control points are not displayed here so if you forget or don't move them at all to match your shape, when uploading to SL, you will receive quite a few unpleasant surprises so use this view only to check the strategical placement of your square control points.
Remember, that you cannot upload your texture into SL in PSD format so transform it into tga, jpg or png format before uploading. Your sculpted map can be in tga or png format.
When you import your sculpted map into SL, in preview window it will be upside down.

The sculpted map will be imported into SL as a texture and will be automatically placed into your texture folder. Import your previously drawn texture for the vase too. It will also go to your texture folder. Now let's make a sculptie.

Rez a new prim and in its edit window go to object tab and choose sculpted out of drop-down menu. Click on default sculpted texture and choose your sculpted map. Rotate it to 180 degrees to bring top of the vase up. Apply previously drawn and imported texture and see the results. Even if zoomed out, your vase looks great!

Next, let's make a half full glass of wine. The method will be the same.

TUTORIAL R07 Make stairs

This tutorial is for ROKURO pro and TATARA.
1) Stairs you can stand on
I'm sure some of you have created the stairs you could not stand on them, you might not even get near them. Such a problem is not peculiar to stairs. You might have created large size sculpted objects which you could not get close. In order to get close them you would have to make them "phantom" setting.
This tutorial introduce how to make stairs you can go up and down. Look at the Pic.1

Sculpted prim's collision border is not sculpty's visible surface but is box on which sculpty data is adopted. This is the reason why we could not get close to sculpted prim sometimes.
In order to move sculpty's visible surface to box border as close as possible, in this tutorial I will rotate the stairs as shown Pic.2.

The number of the treads is 7. This is because we can see each tread clearly in View Level-Middle.
Please drew outline of the stairs like Pic.2. Center of the picture must be located inside stairs.
2) Let's mold
Make a new Cylinder file. Select TOKOROTEN tab. And load the outline picture as a background.
You can move control-ponts efficiently following steps
First, move only 16 square control-points which should be located on corners.
Second, select 2 adjacent control-points you moved, then select Equal Intervals in Edit menu. A round control-point sandwiched the 2 square control-points will move middle of them.

When all of the treads are molded, you will see the window as shown Pic.4.

Third, don't worry about inner control-points arrangement, they can be arranged very easily by using Optimize in Edit menu. All you have to do is just selecting Optimize.

Please check the data in case of malfunction. When it works, you will get the data shown Pic.6.

3) Upload the stair.
Upload the data and confirm if you can go up/down the stair.
Save your data as 128 x 128 or less. I recommend data size of 64 x 64.
Check a box of "Use lossless compression" in Upload dialog window, and upload the data. Lossless compression is available up to data size of 128 x 128.
Pay attention that a object is shown upside down in the preview window.

Create the stair and try to go up/down in-world.

4)Create the texture for your upstair
Paint the texture with watching view window and save the data.
You can edit the data on many photo-retouch products.

Load a texture data to ROKUROpro/TATARA to adopt your stair.

TUTORIAL T02 Make a Teapot

1) Our plan

Let's make a teapot with TATARA.
This Tutorial would give you ideas for ROKURO pro uses also.

Through this tutorial you will learn how to make a Cylinder-type-Stitching sculpty. Look at a spout of a teapot. Yes, it opens thanks to the use of a Cylinder type sculpty.

First of all, you need an outline of a teapot. Draw an outline, leaving small blank spaces on all four edges. You don't need to pay attention to the aspect ratio because it will be adjusted automatically when the picture is loaded.

2) Let's Mold

Make a new Cylinder file. Select a Cylinder in File -> New menu.

Select MAGE tab in order to edit in MAGE tab.
Load the outline picture as a background.

Move control-points in reference to Pic.6.

Beginning(or ending if you arrange it backward) is the knob of the lid. Continue to make the body and bottom. Then turn and bend points along a handle. Continue around the body to the base of spout. Make the spout and its inner surface as shown in the picture above.

When you finish the modeling, I recommend that you save your teapot data.

3) Advanced step - Maximization

In this step you will get a great improvement of your creation by making only one selection. But PLEASE SAVE YOUR DATA before going ahead. This operation can occasionally cause unexpected deterioration.

Maximization makes your creation stretch to the largest size. In other words, Maximization eliminates the edges' blank in Pic.3.
You might have come across the sculpted objects which dominated a larger space than their surface. You could not approach close to the object, or you looked as if you were walking in the air or on an invisible object. That is because of these blanks (Blanks are needed to make smooth shape easily)

After saving your data, select Maximize.

4)Upload the data

Save your data as 128 x 128 or less. I recommend data size of 64 x 64.
Check the box labeled "Use lossless compression" in Upload dialog window, and upload the data.
Lossless compression is available up to data size of 128 x 128.

Make sure that the object is shown as a sphere type sculpty in the preview window.
When you use the sculptmap, don't forget to change the Stitching type from default Sphere to Cylinder.

Now you would get your teapot with open spout.

Cylinder type sculpty has open edges, which allows you to make a better shape than the default Sphere type in many cases.
